RF: Directed v Non-Directed Picking

Selecting or not selecting a directed pick option determines what is prompted on the RF device.

If you select a directed pick, the RF screen brings up the next open line item and directs you to what to pick next. It displays the line number (stopping to allow override if the Prompt for line no picking option is selected) and shows the item, description, how many to pick, and a default location. The operator reads the screen to get the item, scans the item number for verification (if required) and scans or accepts the quantity.

Non-directed picking (i.e., leaving the direct pick option blank) is typically used when operators work off of a barcoded picking document (e.g., sales order, label, or tag). The operator can sort or pick the items in any order, and fields are scanned as items are picked. This method may be more appropriate for multiple pickers working on one order or when one picker is picking multiple orders. The custom label interface can print the list of items in the sequence you choose (e.g., a user field, the weight of the item, material attribute, etc.) and can include information that impacts how order lines are picked.

Non-directed picking is very useful for building skids or other containers of mixed line items, using the box label feature to generate labels of what constitutes each. This information is saved for future reference which can be extremely helpful if the customer reports a lost or damaged container.
