Tongariro 2016 |
What's covered?
The journey from Wellington to Rotarua would have been too much in one go so a couple of nights were booked here.
24 November
We left Wellington in drizzle but the weather improved as the journey progressed.
We stopped at the Sugar Plum Cafe at Marton for coffees, a scone and a giant piece of carrot cake.
We didn't have a street address for our hotel, the Chateau Tongariro so we just plugged in Tongariro. At the first junction there was a sign after the turn confirming we were on the correct road but at the next junction we took a wrong turn and went perhaps ten miles out of our way. After backtracking we did find the correct turn.
The chateau, as you can see, is large and inside it had a sort of 1930's charm, even to the extent of having a pianist in the lounge.
We dined in as the chateau is too remote to go out.
25 November
It was raining heavily, as forecast, and the area depended on views! We decided to have a fairly lazy day although Gill did get some washing and ironing done. The 1930's charm of the place with the same sort of service made it a rather pleasant day. Whenever you fancied something to eat or drink, there was someone to bring it to you while you read in comfortable chairs with a roaring log fire.
