Cradle Mountain 2016 |
What's covered?
The third stop on our tour of Tasmania.
14 October
Before reaching Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge, we stopped at Visitor Information to get a park pass to save returning for it tomorrow. It covers us for Freycinet as well.
After checking in and unloading the car, we followed the King Billy Walk. It was posted as a 40 minute walk but it proved to be more like 60 minutes. It was a good walk and we enjoyed it.
Gill went to put some washing in the laundry and nearly tripped over a wombat sitting outside it. During the day we also saw an echidna.
We dined in and enjoyed a beautiful lamb dish.

We had been told that cars often get stopped because of the volume of traffic and when that happens you have to return to the Visitor Centre and get a shuttle. We entered just after 9am with no trouble.
First we went to Dove Lake and walked part of the Dove Canyon Circuit. We then returned to Ronny Creek and took the 40 minute walk to Waldheim and looked around Gustave Weindorfer's lodge. A recording told us of his love of the area and how he met Kate, his wife, and of their life here. They wanted everyone to learn of the beauty of the area and campaigned over many years. Eventully a road was built and later it was declared a national park.
After leaving the park we went to a nearby Tasmanian Devil centre. In fact they had many local animals there including an orphaned wombat that was soon to be returned to the wild.
After dinner we chatted to Felix and Tina from Melbourne.
