Freycinet 2016 |
What's covered?
The fifth and final stop on our tour of Tasmania.
16 October
A pleasant four hour journey ignoring stops. We did stop at Perth (not Perth WA) for a coffee and a bun as well as refuelling.
Lunch was soup at Devils Corner, which looked like a fairly new development with a few food options and outstanding views from high up.
After checking in to Freycinet Lodge it was an easy afternoon before a nice meal in the hotel restaurant. We also booked a boat trip for tomorrow. Our room had the most magnificent view across the bay and it could be seen laying in bed. The wind however was very strong and it was cold. Kathryn on reception checked the forecast for tomorrow and assured us the wind was forecast to drop until late tomorrow afternoon and meantime it should be a good day.
17 October
The Wineglass Bay cruise took us all around the Freycinet Peninsula, most of which is inaccessible by road. We therefore saw more than we otherwise would have done and learned a bit of the history from the captain / owner of the boat. The weather was good and yesterday's high winds had died down. Unfortunately it was not a good day for seeing whales and suchlike, not one!
Dinner again at the hotel.
18 October
Sadly we said our goodbyes to Freycinet Lodge and Kerrie and Kathryn. Also to the Blakes from Hobart whose cabin adjoined ours.
The drive from Freycinet to Hobart proved to be a world class drive. The scenery was spectacular.
We drove through Swansea which boasted some beautifully maintained gardens and then stopped for a few moments to walk part way down to Spiky Beach. A lovely view. Soon after we passed Spiky Bridge, so called because of the stones embedded on top.
On the way, we passed over the Wye River. It had a proper sign put up by the council stating "Wye River", we loved the second sign the had put up "Cos it's bigger than a creek!"
After a coffee stop at Orford we carried on to Hobart. Even with stops, the journey was quicker than we thought so we had quite a wait. The plane was half an hour or so late leaving.
