Sydney 2016 |
What's covered?
Sydney was a must for several reasons but mostly to meet up with Brian and June who we met on our Baltic Cruise in 2014.
18 October
Our apartment at the Mantra was very nice and well appointed. After phoning June to confirm tomorrow's arrangements, we ate in the hotel restaurant.
19 October
Brian met us in the hotel lobby dead on 9am as arranged. After a short walk, we met up with June who was waiting in their car. First we went to Kiama, a lovely coastal town on the south coast. The blowhole was not very active but that didn't spoil it. There was an old Model A Ford which was on The Great Rattler Run. We then came back via Austinmere before stopping for lunch at the Scarborough Hotel. The view was magnificent.
After lunch we returned via Stanwell Tops (aka Bald Hill) near Stanwell Park to watch the hang gliders taking off. After park the car, we went around Darling Harbour and had dinner at Baia.
A fantastic day that we would not have accomplished without Brian and June.
20 October
We met Brian and June at Circular Quays, which was originally named Semi-Circular Quays because of its shape but gradually the "semi" was dropped.
We walked past the Opera House and along the edge of the Royal Botanical Gardens alongside the harbour. After coffee and some time in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Brian and June took us to the Westfield Tower for a buffet lunch in the revolving restaurant. Magnificent views of Sydney and our time allowed us to go round twice.
Brian and June then took us to the Queen Victoria Building which is now a lovely shopping mall. June and Gill went off looking at the clothes shops while Brian took me off to quite one of the best pen shops that I have seen anywhere. We also visited a model shop which had a Morris Minor Convertible in the same colours as the real one I drove in Perth.
After that, we said our goodbyes, hoping that Brian and June will visit the UK sometime so that we can repay the debt.
