What's covered?
Our last stop before travelling on to Auckland for a few days before our tour came to an end. 92 days in all!
4 December
The GPS wanted to take us via Kerikeri, virtually back to Opua, which was nonsense. It made more sense to go via Awanui, Kataia, Herekino, Broadwood, Rawene (ferry crossing), Whinnakie and Opononi but the GPS could not find any of these notwithstanding that they were populated towns on State Highway 12!
After checking in to the Copthorne Hotel, we decided there was nothing in the immediate area so we chose to have a lazy afternoon, other than a stroll along the lovely beach. Our room had a lovely view of the bay across to some very high sand dunes.
We had dinner at the hotel.
5 December
We drove a short way (15 minutes) to the Waipoua Forest where there are some massive kauri trees, the largest having a girth of 16.41 metres! That one (known as Father of the Forest) involved a forty minute walk and we went to the Lord of the Forest and The Sisters.
When we got back to the hotel all the beds were being replaced. We decided we would go the bar for some lunch while our room was done but found they do not open it until 4pm at this time of year! We were a bit early in the season but that did surprise us. Instead we went to The Landing Cafe at Opononi. In the afternoon we completely repacked, partly to ease unloading at Auckland in case parking was an issue and partly in preparation for the flight home.
Again we had dinner in the hotel.
