Robe 2016

What's covered?

The last stop on our journey from Melbourne to Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road.

29 September

We had asked at Port Fairy about places to see on the way to Robe and Mount Gambia was suggested. It sounded like an attraction in its own right but in fact it was a town with not much in the town itself. The Visitor Centre did however have an exhibition on and they suggested Blue Lake and the Tantanoola Cave. The cave was discovered by a teenage boy and for many years his family ran the attraction. However, they could not finance safety changes so they sold out to the government on condition the caves would remain open to the public. Not large but beautiful and very well lit.

Robe House, where we stayed, was the first house to be built there and was the home of the Government Resident in the South East from 1847 to 1869. The foundations were laid in 1846. We were upgraded to what had originally been the current owners own rooms. They had been occupied the night before and as the fire had stayed alight, we were kindly put in these rooms.

We had a nice dinner at Sails. It looked as if it was fully booked but they opened up another area that soon warmed up.
