Kakadu 2016

What's covered?

As well as Trailfinders recommendation, various friends had told us that this was a place to go, so it was put on our itinerary.

6 October

We picked up a Toyota Camry from Avis and found that with three months of luggage with us, it wasn't going to fit in the boot easily. Fortunately, Doubletree had offered to let us leave some of it as we were returning there so we took advantage of that.

Our destination was the Wilderness Wilderness Lodge which we had thought was close to Kakadu. Close to the lodge the satnav wanted us to go straight on but a lodge sign said turn left. As it was a dirt road our first inclination was to ignore the sign as the name was slightly different. We eventually found the sign was correct and the lodge was at the end of a 7 kilometre dirt road. We also learned it was only half way to Kakadu so we decided to leave that until tomorrow and spend the afternoon at the lodge.

The cabins had a lovely view across a wide strip of land, part of which was a landing strip. During our time there we saw plenty of wallabies in that area.

The only option for eating was the lodge but it was a good meal so no problem with that.

7 October

The journey did take about two hours as we were advised but it was all on good road with little traffic.

The first stop was the Bowali Visitor Centre for advice on where to go and for a coffee and then we went on to:

  • The lookout near Burrungkuy
  • Burrungkuy (Rock Art and an area visited by Sir David Attenborough)
  • Jabiru (for petrol)
  • Ubirr (Rock Art)
  • Mamukala (Bird hide).

It was very hot and eventually we decided to return to the lodge.

8 October

Before breakfast and departure, we followed another guest's advice and went on the Wildman's billabong cruise. Several crocodiles were spotted although we could only make out a couple of them at the time. Later we saw more when looking through the photographs that we took.
