Background: Item Substitution Maintenance
Use the Item Substitution Maintenance (ISM) program to set up items that you can select to replace a component on a manufacturing order or an out-of-stock item on a sales order and change an existing substitute. See Road Map for work flow.

Substitute Items for Sales Orders
The substitute items you enter in this program display in the Sales Order Maintenance (OE) and EDI/Sales Quote Maintenance (QOE) programs if the item the customer orders is not available and you selected:
The Allow item substitution? option in System Options Maintenance (XM) program (Order Processing Options) for your enterprise.
N (negative inventory balances not allowed for any item), B (not allowed for bin-controlled items), or C (not allowed for lot-controlled items) for the Manage negative inventory option in System Options Maintenance (XM) program (Inventory Control Options) for your enterprise.
Y or A (accepts substitutes or wants to approve them) for the Allow subs? field in the customer's record in the Customer Maintenance (CM) program.
A, I, or Y for the Order processing availability option in the System Options Maintenance (XM) program (Order Processing Options) for your branch, if you want to check Available to Promise (ATP) before displaying the substitute item.
Substitute Items for Manufacturing Orders
The substitute items you enter in this program display when you select a component and click Substitute in the Material Usage Maintenance (MUA) program. The Manufacturing Order Maintenance (MIM), Picking Confirmation (MPK), and Secured Picking (SMPK) programs also allow you to substitute an item for a component.
You must have selected:
I or A for the Substitutions allowed on mfg orders? option in the System Options Maintenance (XM) program (Manufacturing Options) for your manufacturing branch.
You may choose to set up substitutes for components in the Bill of Material Maintenance (MPS) program. The advantage of using Item Substitution Maintenance is that you can set up substitutes once for possible substitution on multiple bills of material.
Audit Trail
To activate an audit trail, select one of the files listed below in the Audit Trail Maintenance (XAT) program. The system records all transactions. You can then run the Audit Trails (ATR) program and select that file to print a report of these transactions.
