Feature Overview: Serial Number Linking

Serial number linking enables you to link serialized components to serialized parent items for improved tracking. Items

System Options

Serial number linking requires the following options to be set in System Options Maintenance Manufacturing Options:

  • Serial linking active? ensures that labels are printed through Mfg Order Control Number Print (WOCS), if required, and that serialized components are linked prior to receipt of the parent item.

  • Serial linking replacement adj code supports "swapping and linking" of serialized components on repair manufacturing orders when serial linking is active. When a failed linked component is rejected and its replacement picked, the inventory adjustment code specified here is used in determining the general ledger inventory and work-in-process accounts to update.

Item-Specific Requirements

Serial number linking requires that items are controlled by serial number and parent serial numbers are assigned after a manufacturing order is released and before it is received (i.e., the Pre-assign ctrl no? field in Enterprise Item Maintenance (IM) is R).

Programs

These program are specific to serial number linking:

  • Link/Pick Serial Numbers (MSLNK)
This program links specific serialized components to a parent item and picks them to the order after a manufacturing order is released and parent serial numbers assigned. You can then view linked components for a parent serial number (or find the parent serial number in which a component was used) in the Control Number Inquiry (SNQ) program.

  • Component Link Inquiry (SNQCL)
Displays the serialized components used to produce a serialized parent item when links between them have been established with Link/Pick Serial Numbers (MSLNK). SNQCL can be run from the menu or drilled to from Control Number Inquiry (SNQ) by clicking the Comp link button.
