Background: Product Class Codes Maintenance
Use the Product Class Codes Maintenance (TPC) program to add, change, copy, and delete codes that you can use as criteria for posting inventory transactions to the general ledger and for calculating sales prices and commissions. See Road Map for work flow
This topic has these subtopics:
Assign Classes
The codes you set up in this program appear on a drop-down list for the Product class field. You assign a code to an item in the Product class field in the Enterprise Item Maintenance (IM) program.
Uses
You can use product classes in many different ways. Before you set up classes, you should consider how they can be used.
General Ledger Posting
If you use product class as a posting criterion in the Posting Criteria Maintenance (XPC) program, you can post to a different account for each class. You can use product class for inventory, cost of goods sold, commission, labor, manufacturing variance, RMA, return, revenue, tax, surcharge, and WIP postings.
Control Number Setup
If you select PRDCLS for the Constant code option in the System Options Maintenance (XM) program (Control Number Options), system assigned serial and lot control numbers will contain the product class code assigned to that item.
Price, Surcharge, and Commission Hierarchies
If you assign the same price and/or discount to all items in a product class, select PRODUCT CLASS for Item group in the Price Hierarchy Maintenance (PHM) program. Similarly you can assign the same surcharges to all items in a product class by clicking Surcharges and selecting PRODUCT CLASS for Item group.
If you pay the same sales commission rate for the sale of items in a product class, click Commission rates and select PRODUCT CLASS for Item group in the Sales Commission Hierarchy Maintenance (SCHM) program. You may assign sales reps based on the types of products they sell. If you do so, click Rep assignment and select PRODUCT CLASS for Item group in the Sales Commission Hierarchy Maintenance program.
Sort and Selection Options
Many inventory inquiry and report programs allow you to sort and subtotal data by product class. Often you can limit the data displayed in an inquiry or included in a report by selecting a single product class or range of product classes. The Finished Goods Planning (MFP) and Material Requirements Planning (MRP) programs let you plan items in a single product class or range of classes.
